Stardust for Bowie.

Stardust for Bowie: first draft...Stardust for Bowie: first draft...

It all started as a request bij “Studio Brussel” (a popular music radio over here), who wanted to do a special tribute for Bowie. And since –especially his early songs- were often influenced by space and space-flight, they wanted to put that lightning bolt from the album “Alladin Sane” immortalised in the sky.

Of course, this is all highly symbolic, nothing official about that. So we tried to find 7 suitable stars, making a “lightning bolt” in the sky, not too far away from the position (in the sky) of the planet Mars on the day Bowie died (as a reference to some other Bowie songs, “Life on Mars” e.a.). But once again, nothing of this is official. And it would be better if people called it an “asterism” instead of a“constellation”.

- The constellations are pieces of the sky: the whole sky has been divided in 88 official constellations. Compare that to a map of the United States: the boundaries of the 50 States are mostly straight lines, drawn horizontally and vertically. The same goes for the constellations.
This is official since 1930 (by the IAU –International Astronomical Union), and –we're proud to say- it was a Belgian astronomer in charge of this project (Eugène Delporte).

- But what most people call “constellations” are actually “asterisms”, the lines connecting different stars (for example the Big Dipper, or the Tea Pot in Sagittarius,...). Compare this to the game little childrens play: "connect the dots”.
Those “line figures” are not official, they are just an easy way to help people find their way in the sky (for example, we use the Big Dipper to find the North Star). So that means every one can make his/her own asterisms.
And that was what we did: we –invented a “Bowie-asterism” as a tribute to the artist. Nothing more, nothing less :-)...

Nederlands

Strikt genomen zou men trouwens beter de term asterisme gebruiken ipv sterrenbeeld!
